About The Breakers
The Breakers is a National Historic Landmark built in 1895. It is the grandest of Newport's summer cottages, symbolizing the Vanderbilt family's pre-eminence during the Gilded Age. This flagship of the Newport Mansions was constructed for Mr. and Mrs. Cornelius Vanderbilt II by architect Richard Morris Hunt, using brick faced with Indiana limestone. The Preservation Society took ownership in 1972.
