About Burrell Homestead
The Burrell Homestead is a historic brick structure built in 1820 that was home to five generations of the Burrell family through 2001. From 1837 until the Civil War, it served as a major stop on the Underground Railroad, where runaway slaves were hidden and arranged passage to freedom in Canada. The homestead briefly housed the Sheffield Manual Labor Institute, a branch of Oberlin College established in 1836.
