About Ichabod Crane Schoolhouse
This authentic, circa-1850 one-room schoolhouse served as a public school for Kinderhook into the 1940s. It replaced an earlier school where Jesse Merwin, said to be the pattern for Washington Irving’s character Ichabod Crane, served as schoolmaster. Today, the seasonal museum displays exhibitions, period school desks, and objects on one-room schoolhouse education in Columbia County.
