Old Fort Johnson was built by William Johnson in 1749 beside the Mohawk River. The original limestone house was fortified during the French & Indian Wars. Sir William Johnson convened many Native American conferences on this site. It is now a historic house museum, opened to the public in 1906 by the Montgomery County Historical Society, and is listed as a National Historic Landmark.
