About Coffin House
The Coffin House in Newbury, MA, was home to several generations of the Coffin family. Nathaniel Coffin, a merchant-tailor, started a tanning business that sustained the family into the 1800s. The family also engaged in farming, maintained livestock, and held town clerk offices. Enslaved people lived and worked at the house in the eighteenth century, performing tasks such as tannery work, farming, and carting.
