About Will County Historical Museum and Research Center
The Will County Historical Museum and Research Center operates a building originally constructed in 1837 as headquarters for the Illinois and Michigan Canal. This historic building played a central role in the canal's design, financing, and construction. It was recognized by the National Park Service in 1972 with a listing on the National Register of Historic Places and is part of the I & M Canal National Heritage Area. The Will County Historical Society began accessioning artifacts and exhibits here in 1971, opening to the public in 1972.
